HOKA | Bondi 9 3D Billboard

Project Brief

Hoka, a global performance footwear brand, launched the Bondi 9 with a striking 3D billboard in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. In partnership with 3D Advertisers, the campaign aimed to fuse energy, technology, and brand storytelling in a bold visual that stops passersby in their tracks—showcasing the Bondi 9 as both a lifestyle and high-performance icon.

The goal was to unveil the new Bondi 9 in a way that captured both the technical innovation of the shoe and the laid-back inspiration behind its design—Bondi Beach, Australia. The key message: “Everybody Bondi”, a call to experience the ultra-cushioned comfort and futuristic design, whether you’re running, walking, or just living.

The campaign sought to break away from standard retail launches, creating a moment of wonder that aligned with Hoka’s energetic brand voice and its growing global momentum.

Ideas & concepts

We blended two powerful ideas: the relaxing essence of Bondi Beach and the futuristic edge of performance footwear. The environment was constructed to evoke sand and waves—symbols of freedom and movement—while the animation itself featured sleek, modern transitions and sci-fi-inspired design elements that spoke to Hoka’s technological promise.

To further elevate the experience, we reimagined the billboard frame as a window, not a traditional screen—an intentional choice to blur the boundary between real life and virtual brand space, drawing audiences into the story. This approach transformed the shoe reveal into an immersive moment that felt both aspirational and grounded.

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN

• Designed a stylized Bondi Beach–inspired digital space that merges natural elements (sand, waves) with modern, urban surroundings.

• The billboard utilized a transparent window-like frame, offering a unique visual break from standard billboard formats.

• Background tones were kept light, warm, and premium to balance coastal calm with urban energy.

• No character mascot involved in this production. The product itself was treated as the “hero character.”

Object Modeling & Animation

Bondi 9 Shoe Model: Modeled in high detail to highlight sole texture, curves, and color accuracy.

• The animation sequence:

• Transparent glass door opens

• Sand and waves rush in

• A series of futuristic cubes and fragments fly across the scene

• The shoe leaps toward the audience and settles into the spotlight

• Concludes with the brand message: “Everybody Bondi”

Special Effects & Simulation

Particle Simulations: Used for sand movement, water waves, and the shoe landing impact.

Glass Door Effect: Custom shader animations for the opening sequence, giving a sense of realism and anticipation.

Lighting & Compositing

• Lighting was adjusted to reflect daytime brightness with soft shadows and reflections.

• Slight glows and rim lighting were added to the shoe to draw attention during transitions.

• Final compositing layered in brand elements, lighting passes, and depth of field to enhance focus on the product.

Conclusion

This campaign brought Hoka’s Bondi 9 to life with a blend of beachside serenity and high-tech performance, offering a billboard experience that was bold, clean, and unforgettable. The redefined frame, dynamic visuals, and immersive animation set a new standard for footwear marketing.
